Avatar is a science fiction epic directed by James Cameron and released in 2009. The movie stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver.
The movie is set in the mid-22nd century and follows the story of Jake Sully (Worthington), a paraplegic Marine who is sent to the distant moon Pandora to participate in a program that allows him to control an avatar, a genetically engineered body that is used to interact with the native inhabitants of Pandora, the Na’vi. As Jake learns more about the Na’vi and their way of life, he becomes torn between his loyalty to his own species and his growing bond with the Na’vi.
Avatar was a commercial and critical success, and is known for its ground breaking use of 3D technology and special effects. It was the highest-grossing movie of all time at the time of its release and spawned a franchise, including several sequels that are currently in development.
